It was about this time last year that I made a promise to myself to pursue the dream of living in Scotland. I had no expectations of how long or even if I would be successful. The dream is bigger than living in Scotland. It is about continuing to increase my happiness in life and participate in society in a positive way.
Much has changed in the last year and yet, I feel I have remained true to myself. There have been challenges and triumphs. Smiles and tears. Proud moments and not-so-proud ones. Many wonderful and unexpected moments. My confidence has waned a wee bit as I have stumbled occasionally (ok, fallen on my face). I still feel unsteady and my mood reflects that at times. I also feel extremely lucky. Basically, I have lived. No more waiting for tomorrow (most of the time). It has been a wonderful year of learning and I look forward to more learning, adventure, and laughs in the next year as I continue my pursuit.
This bank holiday weekend began with one of those unexpected, simple joys. At the last minute I headed to Ayr right after work to attend a studio session with an artist I had seen at Celtic Connections. I only had time to grab some food at the restaurant within the theatre - turned out to be one of the best meals I have had in years. On to the show, where about 25 of us were treated to an intimate show by three talented singers/songwriters - Dol Eoin MacKinnon, Julia Doogan, and Beerjacket (if you have seen the movie Up, you will recognize his song "Jack Chasing Jill"). Brilliant. Good for the soul.
