Winter Light

My shadow at midday on a chilly January day.

The days are short. My shadow is tall (which is most flattering!). Most days I only get a glimpse of daylight during my lunch hour. Between moving house and holiday activities, I have not had an opportunity to acquaint myself with my new neighbourhood until this weekend. A gloriously sunny and chilly weekend was exactly what I needed.

I did get a few strange looks from the sheep...maybe wondering why I left my wool coat at home.

My best find...a secluded spot to sit by the water, with some company...seals...

I spent time watching the seals float about lazily in the calm water. A few cormorants temporarily disturbed them. With Orca sightings in the water about Shetland, these seals have picked a wonderful and safe voe to enjoy a break in the winter storms. Some seals have not been so lucky.

While this area is not nearly as secluded and peaceful as my previous home, there is beauty to appreciate. Still, it is amazing how quickly you can get used to no car traffic. Maybe I will have that again some day.
