On Friday, I took a train and then walked about half an hour to pay my council taxes in person. Only to find out that the only way to pay is by phone or online. On the train back home, I took care of the taxes and decided I couldn't let the whole day go to waste. So I walked to an attraction in my neck of the woods - The lovely Pollok Country Park and Burrell Collection.
Pollok Country Park is a 360 acre country park located in South Glasgow. There are many walking and cycle trails. Other sights include Pollok House, the Burrell Collection, award winning Highland cattle, and large play areas. The Burrell Collection is an amazing collection of around 8,000 works collected by one man, Sir William Burrell, and gifted to the city in the 1940s. It includes a wide range of art from different eras and cultures.
This was not my first visit. I had visited in 1997 when I was backpacking around Scotland. What I remembered in particular was the beautiful design of the building that houses the collection and how it showcased the art. Although it is in need of some repair, I remain impressed. I barely scratched the surface of the collection and the park. The museum is free. I can walk to it from my flat. I will be back.
Beware - there are wee pink fairies in the woods....
