Long pause. I try to look responsible, with a touch of desperation. Well, how long have you been living in the UK? Only a few weeks. Sorry. Please come back and see us in a few months.
I'm not asking for credit, just a simple bank account with a debit card please. No overdraft. I couldn't help but take it a bit personally. Am I that untrustworthy?
Today I tried something new. A pair of new socks with a look of fiscal responsibility (and my newly acquired council tax statement listing my name and current address).
And success! It had to be the socks.
