Sock Adventures: Getting a Foot in the Door

It seems to be quite a trick to open a bank account in the UK.

My previous attempts followed the same pattern...

We would love to help you open an account at our bank. Who do you currently bank with? Oh, this is your first UK account. No matter. Who is your employer? You don't have a UK employer. Right. Long pause. I try to look responsible, with a touch of desperation. Well, how long have you been living in the UK? Only a few weeks. Sorry. Please come back and see us in a few months.

I'm not asking for credit, just a simple bank account with a debit card please. No overdraft. I couldn't help but take it a bit personally. Am I that untrustworthy?

Today I tried something new. A pair of new socks with a look of fiscal responsibility (and my newly acquired council tax statement listing my name and current address).

And success! It had to be the socks.
